Black pearl is a rare tinted pearl that is naturally black in color and produced by Pinctada Margaritifera. The Pinctada Margaritifera is a saltwater pearl oyster that can grow to the size of a dinner plate. The pearl produced by this type of pearl oyster is black because of the black pigment that the oyster secretes. Black pearl is frequently referred to as Black Tahitian Pearls because the pearl oyster that produces it can only be found in Tahiti and French Polynesian Islands in the South Pacific Ocean.
Black pearl is very rare because Pinctada Margaritifera rarely produces pearls. White pearl oysters also rarely produce naturally black pearls. This type of oyster is sensitive to changing climate and ocean conditions. Pearl jewelry has always brought to mind the essence of the sea. People think of big clams, or beds of oysters and pearl divers swimming down to grab what they can while holding their breath. The image of the tropic seas, palm trees and white beaches gives way to a different reality. Natural pink pearls are beautiful. Pearls jewelry made of these pink beads is lovely and surprising. It’s surprising because these unusual pearls are found in the Miami River in Ohio.
The Ohio valley provided a lot of fresh water pearls and pearl harvesting was a major industry towards the end of the 19th century. Pearls harvested from the Ohio and Tennessee Valley’s had a a broad spectrum of colors including; creamy white, alabaster, blue, green, pink and rose colored. These pearls can still be found today and are sought after because they are naturally grown.
While pearl diving had been the method of bringing pearls to the market in the past, today the production of pearls is much more domestic. Pearls are now cultivated byinjecting foreign material into a mollusk. The mollusk covers the irritant like it would in the wild, with aragonite and conchiolin, and the farmers harvest the pearls. The unpredictable waters of the South Pacific, Neptunes realm, have produced a precious wonder from nature. People have commonly called it the black pearl though Tahitian pearl is the right name if only to define its distinct and immense beauty. Songs and poems have been written and stories have been passed from generations to generations, all in praise of its unrivaled splendor.
The best of everything the Pacific loving possesses has created the Tahitian pearl. It is the molded flawlessly from sand by the large black-lipped oyster or the Pinctada Margaritifera. It is, in fact, a daughter borne out of the romance of both a living being and a motionless mineral. Despite their mastery over technology, humans could not replicate the deed. What they could do is only to further the intensity of the Tahitian pearls beauty. By making wonderful jewelry items with it is as the centerpiece, they could only pay respect to the Tahitian pearl. Is there etiquette for wearing pearls? That question was answered with a no. Today, you can wear pearls of any size with any outfit ranging from T-shirts to formal dresses. It was and still is the tradition that bigger pearls go with the more casual wear while the smaller pearls are more worn with formal dresses. The fact remains that the pearl is always a good accessory to wear during Christmas parties.
Diamonds are said to be the girls best friend but it is the pearl that can make her glow like a moonlight. It is the mystery behind every pearl that allures most women. It is in their luster perhaps. Maybe perhaps they are taken from the bottom of the sea.
Perhaps it is tradition again or etiquette that dictates pearls to be always worn in odd number of strands. In other words, do not use a single strand of pearl but wear a triple strand or more. Pearl in strands of opera length may be wrapped multiple times around the neck or tied across the shoulder to a plain black cocktail dress strap. That would be an interesting statement. Read more...
