If you have never heard of a lapidary then you may want to learn more about it if you are looking for a fun hobby. If you’d like to become a lapidary then you want to become a gem cutter. It is a person that makes lapidary rough into a beautiful gemstone.
In nature, gems are not found in the same manner that they are found in jewelry. They need to be prepared to look that way. A lot of tools and skill are used to prepare the stone.
When you get lapidary rough you will see a lot of extra material that is around the rock or mineral from when it was mined. A lapidary then uses saws and other tools to mold the rocks and minerals and remove the excess stuff that surrounds it. When a gem is cut well it shines and is very impressive. A gem not cut well will be ugly and dull.
You will need to use a saw first on lapidary rough. Then the rock or mineral needs to be cleaned with oil so there is nothing left on it that shouldn’t be there. Most of the time you will find people that collect stamps, some collect coins and other collect collectors beer cans and soda cans with pictures of their favorite sports start printed on them. These are normal things to collect, as they are not too expensive, but then you will find people collecting things like diamond, gold coins, lapidary and gemstones, which gets a bit expensive, just like collecting painting and other more expensive things.
However, when you are in love with anything that s pretty and shiny it is hard to stay away from t. It is like someone who loves to shop. This type of person will spend hours in a store trying on things just to see how items will look on him or her. This type of person will also use shopping as a sort of therapy.
So, when this person is feeling down in the dumps he or she will go out to the nearest mall and spend a ton of money on things that he or she does not need – most of the time, for females and some males, it is shoes. However used equipment is making it possible for more people to be able to practice their craft from the comfort of their own home. Purchasing used lapidary equipment will give you the same benefits as having the new equipment at a fraction of the cost.
However, we do realize that the recession has hit a plethora of people hard. Therefore instead of purchasing the equipment right off the bat, you could save up a little money and attend a lapidary club. You have decided to start something new and different for a distraction from the daily grind. The problem is that you are not sure where to begin. This should help you at least with the basics of the rock tumbling supplies you need first.
You need a tumbling machine. It rotates the barrels that we will discuss later. They come in all different sizes, so be sure to do a little research before purchasing your first one.
Next, you need the items called barrels. These are actually what you put the rocks into for the tumbling process. Since they are most often made of plastic and have to be used to tumble rocks over and over, they will need to be replaced more often than the tumblers.
You should get a barrel set of four. Since you need a fresh one for every step and there are four steps, it just makes sense.
The next item you need is grit. Actually, you need silicon carbide abrasive grit. Beginners usually need three different sizes of it. You can go to a hardware store, if you do not have a local rock/mineral store. Read more... (412 words)

A tumbling machine is your very first step. This is essential for the rotation of the actual tumbling process. Since different sizes are available, do some checking into which one is appropriate for you.
Barrels are the very essence of rock tumbling. They hold the rocks while in the tumbling machine. They will only last about a year with heavy use. They are mainly made using plastic, so getting beat up by rocks can wear them down fairly quickly.
Buy four barrels to start with. There are four basic steps in rock tumbling and you need a barrel for each one.
