A felt cowboy hat is not exactly cheap. So it is worth your while to take good care of it. If you take good care of it, it will not only last you longer but it will look every bit as good as it did when you bought it!
Prevention is better than cure! That adage is equally applicable to felt cowboy hats. This means that you should do everything to keep the hat from getting soiled. That includes washing your hands before picking it up. This is important because cleaning a felt cowboy hat is really difficult. Besides, too much cleaning can actually damage the material.
Another thing to bear in mind to prevent the hat from getting all messed up is to handle the hat only by the brim, back and front. Resist the temptation to hold it by the crown. Using the brim to pick up the hat or to position it on your head will help to keep the hat in good shape too. An out-of-shape hat will say the same thing about you. Read more... (499 words)

Cowboy hats are more than head wear – they epitomize the rugged outdoor life of the cowpunchers of early American history. As protective wear, the hats had to be as rough and tough as the life the cowboys led, exposed to the elements for days and weeks together. Leather and animal skins were the material of choice for hats because other materials were hard to come by in those days. Leather cowboy hats retain the flavor of the Wild West and have become a fashion accessory today. They are versatile enough to provide protection from sun and rain, heat and cold, and do duty as dress head wear for formal and informal occasions. They are durable and comfortable, making them suitable for everyday wear.
The choice of leather as a material for a cowboy hat was no accident. It was chosen because of its superior durability and resistance to harsh weather conditions. At the same time it was comfortable for the wearer. A cowboy hat made of leather took the shape of the wearer’s head. Though the leather cowboy hat blocked the wind, the cold and the heat from affecting the wearer’s head, it could breathe and this kept the wearer comfortable in the summer. On top of all that, it looked dashing and very masculine! This is the reason it became so popular. You can get a leather cowboy hat in any color from off white to black to match your clothes, your complexion or your hair. Read more... (706 words)

Folks living in the Wild West required a hat which would provide them with reliable weather protection from sun, rain, and hot, dusty winds – and which did not require any maintenance. They chose leather as the material for the hat because the other materials available then were just not up to handling all-weather usage. Leather was tough, and weather proof. Natural leather is permeable, it breathes. So the leather cowboy hat kept perspiration from building up on the wearer’s scalp even though he was working all day in the unbearable heat of the Mojave. Leather comes in a wide variety of natural shades: from almost white to almost jet. This degree of comfort with protection with good looks was unmatchable by hats of other materials, the closest competition coming from straw and felt hats. Read more... (700 words)
