As our societies are developing, and getting aware of new issues, which were never disclosed before, everyday through media, and internet, more and more retailers and brands are demanding ethical sourcing policy by their suppliers for the labours of the goods being sold under their umbrella.
Ethical sourcing policy makes sure that the products or goods are not made by forced, prison, or bonded labours. Child labour, i.e. younger than 16years, is also not acceptable by them. Sourcing policy also includes that proper wages are paid to the worker, which are according to the set industry standards of the country in which, the outsourcing must be done, and there should be fair wages according to the work they have done.
Ethical sourcing policy furthermore includes that the wages must be paid according to the laws of a country, and the industrial standards to guarantee that the labourers get wage of what they are working for. The suppliers cannot withhold any part of the wage on the basis of disciplinary grounds or some others, neither the working hours per week should exceed more than 48, but if they do, the workers must be compensated in the form of overtime dues. Workers are forced to lie to their markets about conditions at work. At Tesco and Asda worker respond with the above statement, or else risk being sacked. Investigations in factories, where bargain items are manufactured, that supply to British supermarkets have revealed discrimination, and exploitation of workers.
Through investigation, it was discovered that the reduction in prices of clothes by Tesco, for 700 clothes affected the workers even. This is because when the giants of the market, like Tesco and Asda, reduce prices, the burden comes on to the suppliers, who then put immense pressure on their workers, and treat them badly. These major giants have huge buying power, as per the representative of Clean Clothes Campaign in UK, Sam Maher states, that they can really help in improving the working condition of the labours. All falls upon the workers who merely want to survive, and have to deal with the pressure.
The Investigation was conducted in 30 manufacturing units across Sri Lanka, India, Thailand, and Bangladesh, where 440 workers were interviewed. These workers make clothes for top ranking chains, Walmart (Asda), Tesco, Lidl, Aldi, and Carrefore. A large number of workers said that they mostly had to work overtime, and only few of the overtime hours were recorded, so they were not always paid for the long hours. Absences were almost forbidden, as pay was deducted if leave was taken, and holidays were non-existent. Read more... (568 words)

International trade has transcended boundaries and regions, and has become a universal phenomenon. The lower costs of production in developing countries have prompted many companies to shift their production bases in these locations. The costs of production are much lower in developing countries as compared to the United Kingdom, and this provides an excellent opportunity for entrepreneurs to outsource their production to developing countries. The major chunk of outsourced business goes to Asia, specifically South East Asia, as that region boasts of lower labour rates and an extensive industrial base.
Unfortunately, many famous brands of garments and electronic goods have started using these facilities as an easy way of exploiting the locals. Besides paying the lowest wages to the workers in the production units, they also resort to dictatorial and colonial rules to subjugate their workers.
There have been instances of mass exploitation of workers and some were even refused their meagre salaries as they raised their voices in protest. The factories produced cheaper products and sold them in the European market at compatible rates. The only beneficiary of this trade was the company involved in all this heinous crime. Read more... If you want to start making a difference for the environment, it’s time to start living green. This will mean making active changes in nearly every aspect of your life. What it does not mean, however, is that you will need to sacrifice style to do this. By purchasing eco clothing for the fashion conscious person, you will be able to spend your money in a way that will encourage more designers to start making green clothing themselves.
There are many different natural resources which can all be used to help make clothing. Some of these resources are renewable and sustainable, while others will start to be depleted. Since you can play a factor into which types of materials can be used, you can easily start making choices that favor sustainable resources instead of ones which will begin to run out.
When you stop to consider that environmentally friendly resources will be ones that use organic or recycled products, you can start to see what type of choices you will need to make.
