Laptop Cases: Choosing the Material that is Best for Your Needs

Friday, 23. October 2009

There are several materials used to make laptop cases, and you will see them in various applications when searching for a case. The materials each have pros and cons for different situations. The most common types of materials are listed below, giving you an idea of which to choose.

The first type is a case made from leather. Leather is a material that comes from animal hides, which are normally a byproduct of the food industry. Durability across brands is generally high, especially when compared to other materials, but still it can vary between brands. Colors and styles vary greatly, especially with today’s technology. Cheap version can be mistaken for quality fake leather, but even cheap leather is better than fake leather in durability. You will normally find it as a bag.

Cases made from fake leather are another type. Sometimes this will be called pleather, as they are essentially a plastic or PVC based imitation of leather. Quality and type of plastic blend varies from brand to brand, which will affect quality, durability and water resistance. It tends to be lighter than similar products made from leather. You will normally find them as bags.

Another case material is neoprene. This material works well for keeping a fair amount of moisture off your laptop, such as a small spill or a little splash of rain, and has decent padding. Quality is relatively close from brand to brand, but there is some variance. Normally neoprene is used for laptop sleeves.

Another case material is cloth. This can be synthetic or natural materials. Natural materials come from non-human made sources, and are fabrics such as cotton or canvas. Synthetic materials are human-made, such as polyester and nylon. External coatings are frequently used to provide resistance to water. Bags are the mot common use for this material.

Hard plastic is the fifth type of case material. Durability is very high, as it has very high abrasion resistance. It can resits water well, but the seals can leak if they are not made to be waterproof. They are normally lined, and some even have shock absorbing lining. These cases tend to be a little bulkier than other cases.

You will want to make sure you understand what you need your case to do to be able to choose the best material. The five materials above all provide good material for laptop cases, and are more or less suitable for particular situations. Researching more about laptop cases to find what is best for you would be advisable before you buy a case.
